Job Description

We are seeking a Lead QA Automation Engineer to own and elevate our quality strategy through automation-first testing, strong technical leadership, and close partnership with Engineering and Product. This is a hands-on leadership role.

You will design and build scalable automated test frameworks, set quality standards across teams, and mentor engineers to ensure quality, stability, and performance are built into every stage of the development lifecycle.

Working Hours

AtScale is a globally distributed company with headquarters in Boston MA with employees spanning disparate timezones. To facilitate collaboration we require overlap with a core set of working hours from 10am to 5pm eastern time. 

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve the QA automation strategy, standards, and best practices across the organization
  • Own the automated test pyramid (unit, integration, API, UI, performance) and drive appropriate coverage
  • Partner with Engineering leadership to embed quality by default into system design and development workflows
  • Establish clear quality gates for CI/CD pipelines and release readiness
  • Maintain and enforce high quality standards using automated testing and CI/CD
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable automated test frameworks
  • Lead automation efforts for API, backend, and UI testing
  • Drive test reliability, speed, and maintainability
  • Reduce reliance on manual testing through automation and tooling
  • Define and track KPIs such as defect leakage, test coverage, flakiness, release confidence, and cycle time
  • Use data to drive improvements in quality, speed, and reliability
  • Continuously improve tooling, processes, and workflows
  • Manage, mentor, and technically guide QA engineers and SDETs
  • Set expectations for code quality, test design, and automation standards
  • Lead by example through hands-on contribution and technical reviews
  • Help hire, onboard, and grow QA automation talent

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in QA, test automation, or SDET roles
  • Strong hands-on experience building automation frameworks from scratch or at scale
  • Proficiency in one or more languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Scala
  • Deep experience with API testing (REST, GraphQL) and backend validation
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and test automation integration
  • Strong understanding of modern SDLC, test strategies, and quality engineering principles
  • Proven ability to lead technically, mentor others, and influence without authority
  • Experience with tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, REST Assured, Postman, Gatling, JMeter, or similar
  • Experience testing distributed systems, data platforms, or cloud-native applications
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
  • Experience with performance, load, or reliability testing
  • Prior experience in a Lead QA / Staff SDET / Principal QA role

Preference will be given to candidates with

  • Familiarity with OLAP concepts and technologies such as SSIS and SSAS
  • Experience with technologies such as Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) and Multidimensional Data Expressions (MDX)
