Job Description

We are seeking a Senior QA Automation Engineer to help drive software quality through robust, scalable test automation and strong engineering practices. This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on building and maintaining automated test solutions, partnering closely with software engineers, and ensuring quality is built into the development lifecycle.

You will work on complex systems, own critical areas of test automation, and help reduce manual testing by designing reliable, maintainable automated test coverage across our platform.

Working Hours

AtScale is a globally distributed company with headquarters in Boston MA with employees spanning disparate timezones. To facilitate collaboration we require overlap with a core set of working hours from 10am to 5pm eastern time.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain automated test suites across API, backend, and UI layers
• Build and improve test frameworks, utilities, and tooling
• Ensure tests are fast, reliable, and maintainable
• Reduce flakiness and improve signal quality in CI pipelines
• Own test strategy and automation coverage for one or more product areas
• Partner with engineers to define testable requirements and acceptance criteria
• Participate in design reviews to identify test risks early
• Validate bug fixes, edge cases, and regressions before release
• Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines
• Ensure test failures are actionable and visible
• Help define quality gates and release readiness criteria
• Support pre-release and post-release validation as needed
• Work closely with Engineering, Product, and QA to ensure shared ownership of quality
• Provide guidance and best practices to less experienced QA engineers
• Advocate for automation-first and shift-left testing practices
• Track and improve metrics such as defect leakage, automation coverage, and test execution time
• Contribute to improving test environments and data management
• Continuously evaluate and adopt new tools and techniques

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in QA automation, SDET, or quality engineering roles
• Strong hands-on experience with automated testing frameworks
• Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript
• Solid experience with API testing and backend validation
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines
• Strong understanding of SDLC, test strategies, and quality engineering best practices
• Ability to independently own and deliver test automation for complex systems
• Experience with tools such as Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, REST Assured, Postman, Gatling, JMeter, or similar
• Experience testing distributed systems, cloud-native applications, or data platforms
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Exposure to performance, load, or reliability testing
• Experience mentoring junior QA engineers (informal or formal)

Preference will be given to candidates with

• Familiarity with OLAP concepts and technologies such as SSIS and SSAS
• Experience with technologies such as Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) and Multidimensional Data Expressions (MDX)
